OB-Xd is based on the Oberheim OB-X. It attempts to recreate its sound and behavior, but as the original was very limited in some important ways a number of things were added or altered to the original design. Overview:

While not copying originals, some of the features were taken to a better point. Continuous blendable multimode filter (HP-Notch(BP)-HP in 12 dB mode and 4-1 pole in 24 dB mode). Also, like many synths of the OB-X's generation, the OB-Xd has no internal effects so its sounds and textures can be greatly enhanced by the use of additional processing like chorus, reverb, delay, etc.

VK-1 Viking Synthesizer is an authentic emulation of a classic monophonic analog synthesizer. It has three continuously variable wave oscillators, two ladder filters with a Dual Lowpass or Highpass/Lowpass configuration, a multi-wave LFO, and two modulation busses. VK-1 uses state of the art DSP technology to accurately reproduce the sound of the hardware.

Presets

VK-1 comes with 228 presets in the categories Bass, Bright Lead, Electro Bass, FX, Percussive Lead, Soft Lead, and Synthwave. The 50 Electro Bass and 50 Synthwave presets were created by experienced sound designer eXode. The synth excels at thick bass and rich lead sounds.

Oscillators

At the heart of VK-1 are three adjustable wave oscillators. The continuously variable waveform knob gives the oscillators a unique sound that can’t be achieved with the fixed waveforms found in most synths. A noise oscillator provides three types of noise.

Modulation

Two modulation busses and an LFO provide flexible modulation capabilities.

Filter

The filter is a classic transistor ladder filter modeled meticulously. Different drive modes are available for adding grit. The number of poles is adjustable for a wider range of filter sounds.

Casiotone CT-S1000V with Vocal Synthesis

Casio made a name for itself providing lots of bang-for-your-buck with its musical instruments, as evidenced by my review of the excellent $200 CT-S1 last year. Now the company is launching the CT-S1000V, which offers all the features that made the CT-S1 great, but adds a ton of creative tools for professional musicians and amateurs alike. Chief among these is an innovative vocal synthesizer, which allows you to type any text using your smartphone and then be able to ‘play’ the voices with your keyboard.

In other words, it makes it ridiculously easy for you to sound like Daft Punk.

Traditionally, getting that kind of effect requires an expensive vocoder or hooking up your system to a PC to run through software. It’s not the type of thing you see built right into a keyboard—especially since you don’t even need to even use your voice. It’s even rarer at a price of $450.

The CT-S1000V’s vocal synthesizer features 22 types of voices, “including talkboxes, processed choirs, robot voices, vocoders, and whispered voices,” and these can all be customized with a range of parameters including gender, age, vibrato. You can play phrases according to specific rhythms, or it can ‘say’ syllables as you hit different notes. The wealth of possibilities is frankly pretty remarkable for something at this price point.

Vocal synthesis aside, the device also features a huge variety of sounds and rhythms including the same excellent tones built into the CT-S1. That instrument ‘only’ had 61 tones, while this one has 800 (and luckily, it also includes a screen to actually sort through them). You also get three assignable knobs, various DSP effects, hundreds of rhythms, various accompaniment options, and Bluetooth connectivity (via an included adapter). You can also sample your own sounds using the included 1/8-inch stereo input or Bluetooth.

Casio’s CT-S1 already had better built-in sounds than a keyboard its price had any right to, and in the short time since its release, it’s already become a bit of a favorite for musicians looking for a lightweight, affordable keyboard with high quality sounds built-in. But for some people, it suffered from its barebones approach focused just on keyboard instruments.

The CT-S1000V takes things a step further, and though Casio is still aiming for accessibility here, I can also see it being more useful as a tool for professionals who might want a second keyboard to quickly make original music for their audio and video projects. While the built-in voices aren’t exactly going to convince anyone they’re human, they open up numerous creative opportunities for stylized music. And if you don’t need the built-in vocal effects, Casio’s new CT-S500 offers everything else for about $380. Both instruments can be powered by six-AA batteries and weigh just 10 pounds, although you can plug them into a power brick too.

Sound Magic releases Sienna Bass free rompler instrument for Windows

Sound Magic has announced the release of a virtual instrument by Redjoy Reza, featuring the sounds of a sampled acoustic bass.

Created with Maize Sampler, the Sienna Bass plugin includes a global tune control, ADSR envelope, and volume knob.

Redjoy Reza recorded his acoustic bass in his studio and hope to share its sound with all the musicians. This is why this plugin is a free plugin.

Sienna Bass is very small in size, around 7MB, but its sound keeps a high standard.

Steinberg releases LoFi Piano free virtual instrument for HALion

 

Steinberg has announced the availability of a virtual instrument that delivers a beautiful low-fidelity sound for a different kind of production aesthetics.

Conceived and designed for sound designers, beatmakers, musicians and producers, LoFi Piano is based on an upright piano recorded with carefully selected microphones.

King OZ Records releases DSPplug esquire3 free brickwall limiter plugin

 

King OZ Records has announced a new version in the Esquire limiter series. DSPplug Esquire3 features an improved algorithm combining LU and dBFS detection, so as to ensure real-time detection (LU with its lack of early bass results in slower detection).

The Esquire3 also sports a true peak limiter, this brick wall device will limit to -1.1 / 1.0 dBTP without failing. The result is a limiter with an attack and release that can sculpt sound, providing a smoothing effect.

Version 1.5 has been well tested and the GUI is coded and optimized in pure ruby and no graphic is moving faster than refresh/fps rate. The DSP has been heavily optimized and modified to avoid any clicks and pops during utilization (though when switching from one mode to the next, there will likely be a volume difference).

Voxengo updates SPAN free spectrum analyzer plugin to v3.12

Voxengo has released an update to the SPAN free real-time “fast Fourier transform” audio spectrum analyzer plugin for Windows and Mac.

Version 3.12 adds a “Panel border” palette modifier, and all palettes have been updated to reduce “border” contrast. An existing palette may need to be reloaded for the change to be visible. Additionally ,the spectrum window’s sliders have been modified to look less contrasted.

SPAN provides you with a very flexible “mode” system which you can use to setup your spectrum analyzer preferences. You may specify Fourier block size in samples, FFT window overlap percentage, spectrum’s visual slope. Beside that you can choose to display secondary spectrum of a desired type (e.g. real-time maximum, all-time maximum). Spectrum can be smoothed out visually for an easier examination.
