Tracktion 4 Digital Audio Workstation Is Now FREE

Tracktion 4 is now free for everyone! The old version (last updated on December 9th, 2013) of the popular Tracktion digital audio workstation is now released as freeware for all interested users.

Tracktion 4 was normally priced at $59.95, however in April 2013 it was offered as a free music making program for all Behringer customers (here’s our coverage of that promotion). Now Tracktion 4 is being released as a free tool for anyone interested, potentially earning the title of the best free DAW at the moment. Granted, this is an older version of the software (the most current version is Tracktion 6) but it’s packed with features and incredibly powerful for a free music making application. I’ll have to spend some time with it first and check if it’s really better that Podium Free which is (or at least was up to this point) the best freeware digital audio workstation.

Let’s take a quick look at some of Tracktion 4’s most important features. First off, it can run on Windows (both 32-bit & 64-bit), Mac OS and Linux. Pretty much everyone can install it on their machine and start making music for free right away, regardless of their system environment (this also makes it much easier for people to collaborate even if they’re using different operating systems). Secondly, it features a powerful single screen user interface which (after you spend some time with it) is optimized for a super fast audio editing and mixing workflow.

Of course, Tracktion 4 also loads VST plugins, so you can use all of your favorite freeware and commercial virtual instruments and effect to create and mix music. I’ve also noticed that Tracktion 4 supports loading of video files, so it can be used to edit background audio for video projects (I think that there’s no other freeware tool which can be used for this at the moment).

On the downside, the user interface is definitely different to anything I’ve used before. It will obviously take some time for me to get used to it, but (as I’ve already mentioned) one of Tracktion 4’s main features (according to its users) is the streamlined user interface optimized for a fast mixing workflow. I’m guessing that I’ll be able to use Tracktion 4 to its full potential after I’ve familiarized myself with the interface a bit and after I watch some online tutorials in order to understand how everything works in this free DAW.

Before you go and get your free copy of Tracktion 4, here’s a brief overview of the things you’ll need to do in order to get it up and running on your machine:

Visit the Tracktion website and download the installer (linked below).
Log in to your user account and register your free copy of Tracktion 4.
Install Tracktion 4 and activate it by entering your username and password.

That’s all there is to it! After the activation process, you can scan your VST plugins folder and start working on your first project. The download page also has some free project files to help you get started and figure out how things work in Tracktion 4. MIDI Guitar 2

Major tracking improvements

It has been almost 2 years now – of hard work on version 2 (making it 7 years in total). And oh dear, it has been a long and windy road. At times we even considered a full stop and spend our time solving less daunting problems instead. Thankfully its here now – and where are we?

The manifesto was meant to set the overall direction, but it has made an impact, and each point above corresponds to tracking improvements you will find in MIDI Guitar 2, albeit less bold:

It is much more sensitive than version 1, and even in the fastest legato runs it is unlikely to ever miss a note.
There are no longer any tracking setup options. It just works.
The velocity response is much greatly improved and it does indeed seem to translate into an improved feel.
Tracking is more robust across various kind of guitars and playing styles. Indeed the same technology will be soon powering software for other instruments (bass and violin are first in line).
Latency was reduced, especially for the monophonic setting and generally on hollow body and half-acoustic guitars.

All that said, I certainly don’t want to claim everything is solved by now or that MIDI Guitar 2 is perfect, but I hope you too will experience that it has come a long way.

There are currently a few caveats to the above:

First, the high sensitivity means that it picks up everything. It might be a problem for some players, especially when driving not-so-velocity-sensitive synths. We found that sloppy guitar players usually like the higher sensitivity as notes will be picked up even with sloppy articulations, but they will have to be careful to not trigger a wrong note. We will make some adjustments in the next BETAs based upon user feedback so please let us know how you feel.
Related to this, the monophonic tracking is faster than ever, but it might be a little too wild at the moment, and we expect it to have an update for that within a couple of weeks.
Finally, there is actually one setup option. It’s a noise gate but it is easy to deal with as it only has effect when you are not playing. It is the only means you have to interact with the tracking system. One thing to keep in mind is that for fast legato runs you might need to turn down this noise gate (to pick up very soft notes).

Please remember this is a BETA release and a tech preview. As users get hands on and we receive feedback it is inevitable that we need to adjust some things and fix some bugs. Thus, in the coming weeks we will bring a series of MG2 updates based upon feedback from all of you. The missing plugins will be released and hopefully we will be out of BETA within weeks. Soon after, bass and violin players will get a long awaited treatment.

Please let us know about your experience. In the times of updates it can be difficult for us to answer every email (and still have time to work on the updates) but we will do our best, and any feedback is much appreciated.

The near Future

MIDI Guitar 2 is a major milestone for us, but its also just another step in our overall pursuit to keep pushing the audio recognition technology that MIDI Guitar builds upon.

In the next weeks you will see a series of incremental updates of MIDI Guitar 2, until we are 100% satisfied with it and move out of BETA status. The plugins and a few features are currently missing from the first BETA and most likely we will have to iron out some tracking issues and other bugs as well.

We also plan to release MIDI Bass and -Violin shortly after and we have prepared for a unified release cycle so that in the future all 3 products will get updates in parallel whenever a new feature is ready.

The near future looks very exciting form here and there is so much more to say about future products. Keep an eye on this site for teasers and please join us, give feedback and make requests for new features, etc.

MOTU ships UltraLite AVB audio interface

MOTU has announced it is now shipping the UltraLite AVB, a compact 18-input, 18-output audio interface with DSP mixing, wireless control, AVB audio networking and best-in-class analog audio quality for on-the-go mobile audio recording.

    The latest in MOTU’s award-winning UltraLite series, the UltraLite AVB provides more I/O than previous models, with separate mic and guitar inputs (two each), 8-channel ADAT optical (switchable to stereo TOSLink), 6 x 8 balanced quarter-inch analog I/O and MIDI IN/OUT jacks, all housed in a rugged aluminum alloy half-rack chassis that slides easily into a backpack.

    The balanced analog outputs achieve a measured dynamic range of 117 dB, rivaling the audio quality of interfaces at much higher price points.

    Expanded DSP doubles the available processing power for the redesigned console-style mixer, which provides 48 inputs, 12 stereo busses and 32-bit floating point effects processing, including modeled analog EQ, vintage compression and classic reverb. Matrix routing lets users quickly patch ins to outs, or split inputs to multiple destinations. Users can even use the UltraLite AVB as a stand-alone mixer and control everything wirelessly from innovative web app software running on their iPad™, iPhone™, tablet, smartphone and laptop.

    “Like its predecessors, the UltraLite AVB delivers an impressive combination of superb audio quality and innovative features that truly set it apart from other mobile audio interfaces,” said Jim Cooper, MOTU Director of Marketing.

    The UltraLite AVB connects to a computer through AVB Ethernet or audio class compliant hi-speed USB 2.0 (compatible with USB 3.0 and iOS) and records at sample rates up to 192 kHz.

    Through AVB Ethernet, users can connect another MOTU AVB interface for more I/O — or connect to an expanded MOTU AVB network with multiple interfaces and computers.
